Asthma Management for Students in Saint Paul Public Schools
Vision:  Students with Asthma are under Good Control

Asthma is the most common chronic disease of childhood. In the United States, 9 million children have been diagnosed with asthma at some time in their life.  The most recent statistics indicate that 12% of all children have asthma.  This means that 1 in 9 school children have asthma, according to the National Center for Health Statistics and American Lung Association.

The most recent statistics for Saint Paul Public Schools show that 4100 students, or 10%, have asthma (July 2006).  This means that 2 or 3 children per classroom has asthma.  The number of children that have asthma is increasing.

Understanding asthma is important in the school setting because children spend up to ten hours each day at chool - more than any other setting besides home.  Childhood asthma is associated with 14 million lost school days each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Students’ whose asthma is in good control should be able to participate in school, exercise and sports without restrictions and have good attendance.

Together we can control asthma and keep our students safe, healthy and in school learning.

The Rule of 2:  Applies to Children and Adults

Do you use a quick relief inhaler (albuterol) more than 2 times a week?

  • Do you wake up at night due to asthma or cough more than 2 times a month?
  • Do you refill your quick relief inhaler (albuterol) more than 2 times a year.

If you answer “yes” to any of these questions, it is a sign that your asthma may be poorly controlled.

What should you do?
If your child is having trouble, talk to your child’s school nurse and help your child get to their health care provider for an asthma check-up.  If you are an adult, talk to your health care provider for an asthma check-up.  If you have any questions, please contact the nurse in your school.
